Automating Job Scheduling for Windows

Published By: Tidal Software     Published Date: Sep 03, 2008
Datacenters experience constant change under pressure from technology and business drivers. IT systems are becoming more, not less complex as new technologies are introduced, and IT staffs are not growing to keep pace with the growth in size and complexity of the typical datacenter. Windows administrators need to radically simplify both complex and routine tasks if they are going to effectively respond to the constant pressure to deliver increasing value with limited resources. The most effective thing Windows administrators can do to address this issue is to minimize duties associated with maintaining the existing infrastructure.

Increase Rack Cooling Efficiency and Solve Heat-Related Problems

Published By: Tripp Lite     Published Date: Sep 11, 2014
Cooling tends to take a back seat to other concerns when server rooms and small to mid-size data centers are first built. As computing needs grow, increased heat production can compromise equipment performance and cause shutdowns. Haphazard data center expansion creates cooling inefficiencies that magnify these heat-related problems. Users may assume that they need to increase cooling capacity, but this is expensive and often unnecessary. In most cases, low-cost rack cooling best practices will solve heat-related problems. Best practices optimize airflow, increase efficiency, prevent downtime and reduce costs.

Top 8 Considerations for Choosing the Right Rack Power Distribution Units to Fit Your Needs

Published By: Tripp Lite     Published Date: May 15, 2018
As organizations pursue improvements in reliability and energy efficiency, power design in data centers gets substantial attention—particularly from facilities and engineering personnel. At the same time, however, many IT professionals tend to spend little time or energy on the specific products they use to deliver and distribute electrical power. In?rack power is often considered less strategically important than which servers or databases to deploy, and it is often one of the last decisions to be made in the overall design of the data center. But choosing the right in-rack power solutions can save organizations from potentially crippling downtime and deliver significant up-front and ongoing savings through improved IT efficiency and data center infrastructure management.

Choosing Close-Coupled IT Cooling Solutions

Published By: Tripp Lite     Published Date: Jun 28, 2018
As high-density IT equipment becomes the new normal, the amount of heat generated continues to grow substantially – as does the challenge of efficiently cooling data centers. Traditional perimeter and/or raised floor computer room air conditioning systems increasingly struggle to remove concentrated heat loads. In many small to mid-size data centers, implementing close-coupled cooling solutions can be a highly effective and efficient strategy for supplementing cooling capacity. Located in or near server racks, close-coupled air conditioning units focus cooling where it is needed most without lowering the temperature of the entire data center. In addition, these modular solutions make it easy to reconfigure cooling to handle new equipment or eliminate hot spots. As a result, using close-coupled portable, rack-mounted or row-based air conditioning units tailored to your specific data center needs can boost cooling efficiency and add valuable flexibility.

Top 12 Questions to Consider When Choosing UPS Systems for Network/Server Applications

Published By: Tripp Lite     Published Date: Jun 28, 2018
One of the fundamental decisions in the design of data centers, server rooms and network closets is which uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems to use. You cannot be certain that the power you receive from your local utility will be suitable for your equipment, or that it will always be available. And even when you are receiving good-quality power from the utility, equipment inside your facility (such as electric motors) can introduce power problems. A network/server UPS system conditions input power 24x7 to ensure that your equipment always receives reliable power and protection from damaging and disruptive power problems. A network/server UPS system also supports your equipment during power failures, providing enough battery backup runtime to outlast shorter outages. During longer outages, the UPS system will provide enough runtime to save files and gracefully shut down systems or to ensure that equipment is powered until standby generators are ready to support the load. The CIO Guide to Autonomic IT

Published By: Turbonomic     Published Date: Jul 05, 2018
Organizations are adopting cloud computing to accelerate service delivery. Some try to deliver cloud economies of scale in their private data centers with the mantra “automate everything,” a philosophy often simpler in theory than practice. Others have opted to leverage public cloud resources for the added benefit of the pay-as-you-go model, but are finding it difficult to keep costs in check. Regardless of approach, cloud technology poses the same challenge IT has faced for decades: how to assure application performance while minimizing costs.

Can You Really Support Business Continuity Requirements?

Published By: VMTurbo     Published Date: Mar 25, 2015
Intelligent N+X Redundancy, Placement Affinities, & Future Proofing in the Virtualized Data Center Virtualization brought about the ability to simplify business continuity management in IT. Workload portability and data replication capabilities mean that physical infrastructure failures no longer need impact application services, and they can rapidly be recovered even in the event of complete site failure. However, Enterprises and Service Providers face new challenges ensuring they have enough compute capacity in their virtualized data centers to support their business continuity requirements, while at the same time not over provisioning infrastructure capacity resulting in unnecessary capital expenditure.

Are Your Capacity Management Processes Fit for the Cloud Era?

Published By: VMTurbo     Published Date: Mar 25, 2015
An Intelligent Roadmap for Capacity Planning Many organizations apply overly simplistic principles to determine requirements for compute capacity in their virtualized data centers. These principles are based on a resource allocation model which takes the total amount of memory and CPU allocated to all virtual machines in a compute cluster, and assumes a defined level of over provisioning (e.g. 2:1, 4:1, 8:1, 12:1) in order to calculate the requirement for physical resources. Often managed in spreadsheets or simple databases, and augmented by simple alert-based monitoring tools, the resource allocation model does not account for actual resource consumption driven by each application workload running in the operational environment, and inherently corrodes the level of efficiency that can be driven from the underlying infrastructure.
