Improving Backup Performance with Defragmentation

Published By: Diskeeper Corporation     Published Date: Jun 08, 2007
With continued expansion of organizational storage allocation requirements, the time required for file-based data backup also continues to increase yet the time allotted for this data backup remains constant, exposing a critical issue. Though backup software vendors continue making advancements in technology to speed up the process, disk fragmentation will continue to remain an unresolved issue that must be addressed on the file system level to solve this bottleneck.

Is Real-Time Defragmentation Needed in Today's Environment?

Published By: Diskeeper Corporation     Published Date: Jun 08, 2007
In today's environment of bigger disks storing not only larger files but more files than ever before, the effects of fragmentation worsen markedly with each day's use. To keep up with same-day performance degradation, disks must be defragmented in real-time.

Self-Tuning Disk Drives Eliminate Performance Bottlenecks and Heighten ROI

Published By: Diskeeper Corporation     Published Date: Jun 08, 2007
The size of today’s hard drives boggles the mind. Coupled with this surge in disk capacity is an explosion in file sizes. And multi-MB PowerPoints, MP3s and PDFs litter the hard drive. The problem is that drive I/O speed has not kept up the pace. As a result, it has developed into a serious bottleneck in system performance.

Ponemon Study: The TCO of Software vs. Hardware-based Full Disk Encryption

Published By: WinMagic Inc.     Published Date: Apr 23, 2013
This paper extends the findings of the Total Cost of Ownership for Full Disk Encryption (FDE), sponsored by WinMagic and independently conducted by Ponemon Institute published in July 2012, The purpose of this original research was to learn how organizations deploy full disk encryption solutions for desktop and laptop computers as well as the determination of total cost and benefits for organizations using this technology. A reanalysis of this research allows us to formulate new findings that compare the total cost of ownership of software versus hardware-based full disk encryption solutions.

Ins and Outs of IOPS

Published By: Dell     Published Date: Aug 16, 2013
"IOPS (I/O operations per second) is an easily understood and communicated unit of measurement, which is why it’s so widely used. Unfortunately, it’s also easy to oversimplify. IOPS describes only the number of times an application, OS or VM is reading or writing to storage each second. More IOPS means more disk I/O, and if all IOPS are created equal, we should be able to measure disk activity with it alone. But they aren’t. Read the White Paper "

ESG Whitepaper: Archive plus Backup, Disk plus Tape

Published By: HP     Published Date: Aug 08, 2014
Although ESG continues to see the vast majority of IT organizations living within a disk-plus-tape world, no one can argue against the idea that the cloud is becoming a viable and attractive component of any data protection architecture. Modern disk and tape solutions have overwhelming benefits for ROI, but those benefits can often be expanded by leveraging the economics and additional agility capabilities of a cloud tier. And all of those tiers would benefit from smarter data protection and preservation mechanisms through the combination of both backups and archiving.

Powerful Data Protection with Deduplication 2.0

Published By: HP     Published Date: Aug 11, 2014
A few years ago, two technologies emerged to dramatically improve the industry’s ability to protect data. The cost of disk drives came down, and deduplication technology was introduced. This breakthrough is sometimes referred to as Deduplication 1.0. Like any technology, you’d expect it to evolve over time. HP launched the HP StoreOnce deduplication technology roadmap in 2010 to do just that. The result? Deduplication 2.0 or what HP calls “Federated Deduplication”. This next generation deduplication addresses some of the issues inherent in existing deduplication solutions: performance, flexibility, and data management and not only that, when moving from your legacy storage backup systems, you can reduce the amount of your stored backup data by 95 percent or we’ll make up the difference with free disk capacity and support.

Maximizing Data Security with Whitewater Cloud Storage Gateways

Published By: Riverbed     Published Date: Sep 05, 2014
Information is becoming the currency of the 21st century, and organizations of all sizes are creating more information than ever before. Frequently, organizations struggle with how best to balance storage requirements with available budgets. The benefits of greater storage capacity are clear: better change management and roll-back, easier archival and discovery, reliable backup and recovery. But to continually grow on-site capacity requires unsustainable investment and introduces unnecessary risk. Prominent cloud service providers present an appealing alternative with their vast amounts of storage, offering low cost, high availability, and built-in redundancy. Riverbed’s Whitewater® family of cloud storage gateways is a drop-in replacement for existing tape- and diskbased backup targets, cuts backup costs 30-50% compared to tape and disk, and provides effective DR capability with minimal effort.

New Life for Dead Storage Technologies

Published By: PowerFile, Inc.     Published Date: Mar 15, 2007
After a decade and a half optical technologies in the enterprise storage market account for only a fraction of 1% of enterprise storage hardware spending. For a traditional optical-based enterprise storage supplier, these are tough facts to acknowledge. Yet there will be a dramatically different future.

Dynamic Deduplication - Achieving a 50:1 Ratio

Published By: HP     Published Date: Jul 08, 2009
In these days of rampant data growth, a technology that can increase the effective capacity of a disk-based backup system by a ratio of up to 50:1 is big news. Data deduplication allows you to store up to 50 times more backup data into the same disk footprint — giving you a better chance of restoring your users' lost data from exactly the point they need it. This white paper explains how this innovative data deduplication solution works and also establishes how a 50:1 deduplication ratio may be achieved.

Virtual Tape Libraries Without Complexity

Published By: Spectra Logic     Published Date: Aug 21, 2009
Disk in the form of - that is, disk presented as tape - can be added without requiring huge changes to existing backup strategies. This is more straightforward than adding disk into an existing environment, because adding disk without the VTL interface requires complex and unavoidable changes to existing strategies.

Virtualization and Disk Performance

Published By: Diskeeper Corporation     Published Date: Oct 30, 2008
Virtualization does have its dangers, as it incurs greater stress on physical resources. While under utilization of CPU may be a driving factor to virtualize servers, other hardware resources may become overtaxed. Given that a host system has limited ability (depends on application) to page memory used by the guest systems, the most recognized bottleneck to address is physical memory (RAM). Options to programmatically alleviate memory bottlenecks incur performance issues when the disk is re-introduced. Another major component and perhaps less acknowledged is the disk subsystem. In many cases, depending the purpose and application of the guest/virtual systems, the disk bottleneck will be the most significant barrier to performance.
