Big Data, Bad Data, Good Data - The Link Between Information Governance and Big Data Outcomes

Published By: IBM     Published Date: Oct 18, 2016
Big data analytics offer organizations an unprecedented opportunity to derive new business insights and drive smarter decisions. The outcome of any big data analytics project, however, is only as good as the quality of the data being used. Although organizations may have their structured data under fairly good control, this is often not the case with the unstructured content that accounts for the vast majority of enterprise information. Good information governance is essential to the success of big data analytics projects. Good information governance also pays big dividends by reducing the costs and risks associated with the management of unstructured information. This paper explores the link between good information governance and the outcomes of big data analytics projects and takes a look at IBM's StoredIQ solution.

No More Chewy Centers: The Zero Trust Model Of Information Security

Published By: IBM     Published Date: Apr 20, 2017
There's an old saying in information security: "We want our network to be like an M&M, with a hard crunchy outside and a soft chewy center." For today's digital business, this perimeter-based security model is ineffective against malicious insiders and targeted attacks. Security and risk (S&R) pros must eliminate the soft chewy center and make security ubiquitous throughout the digital business ecosystem — not just at the perimeter. In 2009, we developed a new information security model, called the Zero Trust Model, which has gained widespread acceptance and adoption. This report explains the vision and key concepts of the model. This is an update of a previously published report; Forrester reviews and updates it periodically for continued relevance and accuracy.

The Business Value of a Security Monitoring and Analytics Platform

Published By: IBM     Published Date: Jul 28, 2017
Modern enterprises are doing their best to address three simultaneous and closely interrelated objectives related to their information technology/infrastructure: To identify and assess security-related risks, and manage them to an acceptable level To achieve, sustain, and demonstrate compliance with policies and regulatory requirements To improve the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of ongoing operations, e.g., to provide greater flexibility and scale at lower total annual cost For several years now, Aberdeen Group has referred to this trifecta of strategic objectives as the quest for enterprise computing infrastructure to be secure, compliant, and well-managed.

4 Reasons Businesses Must Transform Accounts Payable with Digital Technologies

Published By: Esker     Published Date: Jul 17, 2018
No matter what future you see ahead for your accounts payable (AP) organization, one thing is sure: If your organization is going to succeed in the emerging digital trade and commerce environment, it will need to process transactions more efficiently than ever, have faster access to AP information, and be able to act upon information and identify opportunities more quickly. This will require AP organizations to transform their processes with digital technologies. Accounts payable departments that delay their digital transformation initiatives risk falling behind their peers and putting their business at a competitive disadvantage in the global business landscape. This white paper details the growth of digital technologies, the dangers of relying on manual and semi-automated AP payable processes, the benefits of using digital technologies in AP, and how effective change management ensures the success of digital transformation efforts.

Five Strategies for Email Data Loss Prevention

Published By: SilverSky     Published Date: Mar 26, 2014
The average employee sends and receives about 110 emails each day or 29,000 emails per year. One in every 20 of those emails contains “risky” data – from sensitive attachments to social security numbers to protected health information to valuable corporate secrets that set your organization apart. All of this risky data can become toxic to your company if it’s hacked or suffers a breach – causing reputational damage, customer loss, heavy fines and decreased competitive edge. SilverSky’s Email DLP is powered by IBM technology. Download SilverSky’s Email DLP white paper to review the 5 strategies your organization should be doing to protect your email.

Business Transformation: A Roadmap for Maximizing Organizational Insights

Published By: SAS     Published Date: Sep 30, 2014
When Information Revolution1 was published in 2006, no Chinese based companies were among the top 10 largest companies by market capitalization. Apple didn’t sell phones. Facebook was something college kids used to connect with their friends. Back then, we talked a lot about the amount of data coming in and faster processing speed. What we believed then remains true today: Data, and the decision-making process, can be moved throughout the organization to equip every decision maker (automated, line worker, analyst, executive) to make the best choices. By operationalizing analytics, organizations can identify and quantify both opportunity and risk. Information Revolution highlighted SAS’ Information Evolution Model, which helps organizations understand how they interact with their information and how to extract more value from it through analytics.

SC Magazine: Analyze This! (security brief)

Published By: SAS     Published Date: Jun 10, 2016
Understanding security analytics can be a daunting job. It is more than just analyzing log files but it is less than a full-blown information security platform. In fact, according to Anton Chuvakin, research vice president for security and risk management at Gartner, it is not yet even a “market,” but rather still just a ”concept” that has yet to define best practices.

Worldwide Retailer Boosts Privacy with Security Intelligence

Published By: Q1 Labs     Published Date: Feb 02, 2012
A leading retailer with stores worldwide was seeking a more innovative tool to protect customer privacy and intellectual property. PCI compliance mandated log collection, but a vast number of different tools generated an overwhelming amount of log data, making it difficult for the small security team to review it effectively. The solution the company chose had to fit into a diverse network, provide intelligent reporting and offer a centralized management console.

The Shortcut Guide to Protecting Against Web Application Threats Using SSL

Published By: Symantec Corporation     Published Date: Oct 03, 2013
Businesses face an increasingly complex set of threats to their Web applications—from malware and advanced persistent threats (APTs) to disgruntled employees and unintentional data leaks. Although there is no single security measure than can prevent all threats, there are some that provide broad-based mitigation to a number of threats. The use of SSL encryption and digital certificate-based authentication is one of them. Changes in the way we deliver services, the increasing use of mobile devices, and the adoption of cloud computing compounded by the ever-evolving means of stealing information and compromising services leave Web applications vulnerable to attack. In this chapter, we turn our attention to the combined risk of losing data and losing customer trust.

Practical Threat Management for Educational Institutions

Published By: AlienVault     Published Date: Mar 30, 2016
The public demands accountability for data breaches involving systems that include personally identifiable information (PII) and expects that all educational institutions will have the same levels of security that Fortune 500 companies do. However, most educational institutions have fewer IT security resources than their larger enterprise counterparts, yet they face the same threats from attackers. Fortunately, there are solutions. This whitepaper by SANS instructor Jake Williams walks through an example of a typical breach in an education organization, highlighting common ways attackers gain access to a network and practical steps to reduce risk. Download this whitepaper to learn: • Common security gaps that make educational institutions vulnerable to attack • Practical security controls that won't break the bank • Key questions to evaluate security vendors • A checklist summarizing steps you should take now to improve security

Mitigating Risk Using Power Management System

Published By: Schneider Electric     Published Date: Jun 07, 2019
Because electricity is a key commodity for business it represents significant financial risk. Yet many power management systems remain isolated and separate from the rest of the business enterprise. The result is poor access to incomplete information, with only limited knowledge of risk exposure. An integrated, comprehensive power management system that includes metering, software, and power quality mitigation equipment offers the most holistic, systems-based approach to managing this risk exposure.
