Virtualization & Cloud Management Using Capacity Planning

Published By: IBM     Published Date: Apr 18, 2012
The term virtualization refers to the creation of virtual machines, virtual networks, and virtual disks (logical images of physical resources) that can execute work and then be returned to a shared resource pool. Cloud computing makes use of virtualization but cloud computing also focuses on allowing computing to be delivered as a service.

Are Your Capacity Management Processes Fit for the Cloud Era?

Published By: VMTurbo     Published Date: Mar 25, 2015
An Intelligent Roadmap for Capacity Planning Many organizations apply overly simplistic principles to determine requirements for compute capacity in their virtualized data centers. These principles are based on a resource allocation model which takes the total amount of memory and CPU allocated to all virtual machines in a compute cluster, and assumes a defined level of over provisioning (e.g. 2:1, 4:1, 8:1, 12:1) in order to calculate the requirement for physical resources. Often managed in spreadsheets or simple databases, and augmented by simple alert-based monitoring tools, the resource allocation model does not account for actual resource consumption driven by each application workload running in the operational environment, and inherently corrodes the level of efficiency that can be driven from the underlying infrastructure.

Kimpton Hotels: Achieving Success with EMC Converged Infrastructure

Published By: EMC Converged Platforms     Published Date: Aug 19, 2016
Kimpton's success as the #1 boutique hotel company in the United States started with the implementation of the most advanced and reliable converged infrastructure system - VCE Vblock®. Modernizing the data center enabled this top hotel chain to spend less time focusing on managing and supporting infrastructure, and more time serving its ecosystem. Some of the benefits Kimpton achieved since the deployment of EMC Converged Infrastructure from VCE included a 25 percent reduction in operating expenses by moving to Vblock Systems, compared with an expected savings of only 10 percent. Kimpton can also stand up virtual machines (VMs) in minutes to capitalize on business opportunities, compared to days or weeks with the old infrastructure. Watch this video to learn more about the Kimpton Hotels story.

Meeting Business Data Protection Needs in a Mixed Physical / Virtual Environment

Published By: Arcserve     Published Date: Jun 11, 2014
Virtualization has without doubt enabled IT organizations to obtain maximum efficiency from their physical hardware, but virtualization has also increased the complexity these organizations have to manage, and that includes data protection. This paper discusses some of the hidden complexities virtualization introduces to backup and recovery requirements, and the challenges created when backup involves a combination of physical servers and virtual machines. It also discusses ways that backup and recovery processes can be simplified by avoiding point solutions.

vCPU Sizing Considerations

Published By: Dell     Published Date: Aug 16, 2013
"The number of vCPUs should be one of your most important considerations when sizing virtual machines. But getting the right balance — neither over-allocating nor under-allocating — is a challenge. You’ll need to select the number of vCPUs, the size of the virtual disk, the number of vNICs and the amount of memory. With all those variables, a little guidance is in order. Read the White Paper "

Too Many Racks? Simplify With Bladesystem, HP's Advanced Blade Infrastructure

Published By: Hewlett-Packard     Published Date: Aug 02, 2013
Every data center IT manager must constantly deal with certain practical constraints such as time, complexity, reliability, maintainability, space, compatibility, and money. The challenge is that business application demands on computing technology often don’t cooperate with these constraints. A day is lost due to a software incompatibility introduced during an upgrade, hours are lost tracing cables to see where they go, money is spent replacing an unexpected hardware failure, and so on. Day in and day out, these sorts of interruptions burden data center productivity. Sometimes, it’s possible to temporarily improve the situation by upgrading to newer technology. Faster network bandwidth and storage media can reduce the time it takes to make backups. Faster processors — with multiple cores and larger memory address space — make it possible to practically manage virtual machines.
